About Bytewise
A small independent site publishing practical technology writing for people who would rather the thing just worked.
Bytewise exists because most consumer technology advice is written either for people who already know the answer or for search engines. We aim at the large group in between: capable people who do not want to become hobbyists in order to keep a laptop running well.
What we cover
Four areas, chosen because they are where ordinary use most often meets avoidable frustration:
- Hardware and maintenance — keeping machines fast and knowing when replacement is genuinely warranted.
- Data and backups — not losing things that cannot be replaced.
- Browsers — performance, privacy, and extensions.
- Focus and workflow — the software and habits around attention, examined sceptically.
How we work
Every procedure we publish is one we have run ourselves on the hardware and operating system versions named in the article. Where we are reporting a figure we did not measure, we say so. Where something depends on your specific model or configuration, we say that too rather than flattening it into a false general rule.
We revisit articles when the underlying software changes. The date on an article is the date it was last verified, not the date it was first written.
How this site is funded
Bytewise is free to read and supported entirely by advertising. We work with third-party advertising partners who serve the ads you see and who may set cookies in your browser; what they collect and how to opt out is set out in our privacy policy.
Advertisers have no involvement in what we publish. Nobody reviews an article before it goes up except us, and no advertiser has ever been shown one in advance. Ad slots are fixed positions in the page template — they are not placed to interrupt a specific argument, and no article's conclusion has ever been shaped by who happens to be buying inventory that week.
If we get something wrong, we fix it in the article and note what changed at the bottom. Tell us via the contact page — corrections are read first.
What we do not do
We do not publish sponsored posts, we do not accept payment for coverage, and we do not run "best of" lists assembled from affiliate feeds. If we ever add affiliate links, they will be disclosed on the page where they appear and in this section.
