This is a working template, not legal advice. Replace every example.com address and the operator details in section 1 with your own, confirm the list of advertising partners in section 4 matches what you actually run, and have it reviewed against the law where you and your readers are based (GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA and others impose different duties). 1. Who we are

This site is operated by Bytewise ("we", "us"). For any privacy question or to exercise the rights described below, contact privacy@example.com.

2. The short version

  • We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not sell your email address.
  • We show advertising, and our advertising partners set cookies and similar identifiers in your browser.
  • Those partners may use that data to profile you and personalise the ads you see, here and elsewhere.
  • You can opt out. Section 7 explains how.

3. Information we collect directly

We collect very little ourselves:

  • Server logs. Our hosting provider records standard request data — IP address, timestamp, page requested, referring page, and user-agent string. This is used for security and to diagnose faults, and is retained for a limited period.
  • Local preferences. Your light/dark theme choice is stored in your browser's local storage under the key bytewise-theme. It never leaves your device and we cannot read it.
  • Correspondence. If you email us, we keep the message and your address for as long as needed to deal with it.

4. Advertising and third parties

This site is funded by advertising. We serve ads through Adsterra and the demand partners it works with. When a page loads, these partners may:

  • set and read cookies, or use similar identifiers such as local storage;
  • receive your IP address, approximate location, device and browser characteristics, and the page you are viewing;
  • build or add to a profile used to select which ads to show you, on this site and on others.

This processing is carried out by those partners as independent controllers of that data. We do not receive the profiles they build and cannot access or delete them on your behalf. Their own policies govern what they do:

5. Cookies used on this site

Cookies and similar technologies here fall into two groups:

  • Strictly necessary / preference. Only your theme setting, stored locally as described above. No tracking value.
  • Advertising. Set by our advertising partners, not by us, for ad selection, frequency capping, and measurement.

You can clear or block cookies in your browser settings at any time. Blocking advertising cookies does not stop ads appearing; it means they are selected without a profile.

6. Legal bases (UK/EU visitors)

Where the GDPR applies, we rely on our legitimate interest in operating and securing the site for server logs, and on your consent for advertising cookies and any non-essential identifiers. Where consent is required, it must be collected before those scripts run, and you must be able to withdraw it as easily as you gave it.

This template does not ship with a consent management platform. If you have EU or UK readers you will need one, configured to gate the advertising scripts until consent is given. See README.md for where that hooks into the ad loader.

7. Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or port your data, to object to processing, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. To exercise any of these, email privacy@example.com.

Most browsers also offer tracker blocking, and Global Privacy Control signals are honoured by an increasing number of partners.

8. Children

This site is intended for a general adult audience and is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 where local law sets that threshold). We do not knowingly collect their personal data. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

9. Data transfers and retention

Our hosting and advertising partners operate internationally, so data may be processed outside your country, including in the United States. We keep correspondence only as long as necessary; server log retention is set by our host. Advertising partners apply their own retention periods.

Articles link to third-party sites we do not control. Their privacy practices are their own, and this policy does not extend to them.

11. Changes to this policy

We will update this page when our practices change and revise the date at the top. Material changes will be noted on the homepage.
